Interaction with the MTN ScienCentre

(Click on to visit)
Management of the MTN ScienCentre (now a
nationwide chain) have approached MSSA with a request that we provide a
microscopy display for them – or, at least, to provide elements of a display and
ideas which will allow them to develop a display which would tour the country.
Their mission is to bring science to the masses in an easily digestable,
interactive and fun way. One of the stated goals of our Society is to promote
microscopy – it seems, on the surface at least, that we could do something very
useful together. We are, after all, the ‘custodians’ of the classic symbol of
science – the microscope.
One idea was to assist them in
putting together one of those sets of photographs which starts with a satellite
view of the earth then moves closer and closer in separate photo’s until one is
viewing microscope images. These photos would be heavily laminated and then
presented in the professional manner of these Centres.
This, and other ideas, they
would like to develop with willing and interested members of MSSA to the
maximum benefit of broader science education in South Africa. If there is anyone
who has ideas and/or interested in working on this project then please contact
Tony Bruton at
bruton@nu.ac.za The concept has the support of our ExCo and funds might be
forthcoming from that source.
